Is india a meritocracy??

 "Meritocracy"

In most simple words, meritocracy can be defined as a system in which an individual is given positions or powers according to the Merit he holds rather than resources. A system where progress is measured in terms of talent rather than financial status or social class.

Meritocracy is an efficient system of assigning power positions, be it in a government or some organization. It has proven to be effective over the time. It prioritizes performance and uses it as a scale for promotions, bonuses and other rewards.

Luckily we live in a country, where the system of meritocracy prevails. we live in a meritocratic society as the education system acts as a mechanism to ensure individuals do the right jobs. Therefore, individuals that work hard will be rewarded in society, whilst those who do not will not be rewarded. However, it also requires a clear and definite description of 'merit' and it should be ensured that this merit is within the reach of all the members of a society.

But one thing that should be kept in mind is that while making these conclusions, we all have made one assumption and that is "equality" Most of the Indian population don't have access to education and sufficient facilities needed even for completing the graduation. Obstacles in pursuit of higher education for lower and middle class creates lack of opportunity. Difficulties in acquiring higher education turns meritocracy into elitism.

Most people don't get guidance, resources and time needed to become successful.  And so the system needs to be changed to accommodate such people and at least offer the same starting point to everyone.
