Experimental learning-A solution to rote education

As discussed by me in the previous blogs rote learning is much hazardous and it plagues the Indian education system. But what if we try a little and find a solution to this problem..??  *Experimental learning* It is the practice of learning through doing. It encourages the student to have first-hand experiences with the materials, rather than learning through someone else’s experiences in textbook or lecture. These processes boost student engagement, accelerating learning and improving content retention and consequently boosts the overall development of a child at early ages.  Students who are engaged and learning actively are less likely to become bored and disinterested and once the seed of experimental learning gets sowed in the mind of children it results in a healthy plant of knowledge..!!!Well-planned, supervised and assessed experiential learning programs can stimulate academic inquiry by promoting interdisciplinary learning, civic engagement, career development, c...

Hazardous effects of Rote learning

This wizard commonly known as "Rote learning" Has an adverse effect on the mental growth of children. If not solved soon, it will surely derail the overall development of a child. Lecturing, along with the chalk and talk method, continue to be the dominant teaching strategy used and teachers spend a large amount of classroom time in rote teaching and learning methods such as copying content from textbooks onto the chalkboard and then asking students to copy the same into their notebooks. When learning by rote, learners are given the answer to a question, and that’s the only answer they know. Most of us were exposed to rote learning early in our life when we memorized the alphabet, numbers, multiplication tables, and formulas. And this continued for a long time and soon became a part of education. While handy in some situations, rote learning isn’t the most effective learning process.  There is a huge difference between "well - trained" And "well educated".W...

Why is Rote learning normalised in india.

The main reason behind the practice of Rote learning is the teacher to student ratio in our country. For the ease of syllabus completetion the institutes simply provide notes to the student because in case of heavy strength, experimental learning and focussing on each and every child is no cake walk.  A low teacher-student ratio not only results in overburdening a small group of teachers but also adversely affects the quality of academics. The faculty shortage have worsened over the time due to increasing enrolment rate of the students and low faculty recruitment in the higher education institutes. Institutes should encourage "Experimental learning" There are many merits of learning through experiments. Students are fully engaged (mentally, physically, emotionally) in the active process of learning. Instead of passively receiving content, students are co-constructing knowledge with their teacher and peers. They are actively testing, thinking, challenging, hypothesizing, inter...

Rote learning in indian education system

When it comes to education, it's always the first priority. The most important role of our education system is to build a brighter future for our nation. But the question arises is the education system of india perfect...???  As the time got advanced the concept of "Rote Learning" Got introduced in the Indian education system. Rote learning simply means mugging up the notes provided to the students by their respective institutes and then vomiting them out in the answer sheets. Is this what we call well educated...??? Indian schools and their output are judged by the marks and percentage their pupils score in an examination. So Rote learning is used to memorize the answers to question for a short term to clear the exam. It plagues our education system and needs to be eliminated. This requires overall changes to the system otherwise the nation has to face dire consequences. To change the status quo, Schools need to have holistic approach towards learning and to achieve thi...
